Intel Core i9-7920X Review

The Intel Core i9-7920X has 12 cores and 24 threads. It’s not uncommon for CPUs with more cores and threads to have lower clock rates than less costly ones with fewer cores and threads, but a quick search on the web reveals some worry about this one’s very low 2.9GHz base frequency.

The Core i9-7900X, a 10-core CPU with 20 threads, a 3.3GHz base clock, and 13.75MB of cache, is one step down on the Skylake-X ladder. In addition, the Core i9-7900X is 600MHz slower than AMD’s Threadripper 1920X. Should we be worried? It’s too early to tell, but there’s a lot more to think about than just the base clock speed.

The base clock on Skylake-X, according to our own Jarred Walton, is basically worthless. The base clock is the “guaranteed clock speed” that customers may expect across all cores. The Core i9-7900X has a base frequency of 3.3GHz, however, the all-core Turbo Boost 2.0 rate is 4.0GHz. Every motherboard we’ve tested the Core i9-7900X on has been able to reach that speed with ease, and some will even go as high as 4.5GHz on factory ‘Auto’ settings.

This implies that, while the base clock of the Core i9-7920X is quite low, we’re more interested in the all-core Turbo clock. Our best prediction is that it will be about 3.7-3.8GHz or such. Of course, the i9-7920X remains an unlocked enthusiast processor, so overclocking (with sufficient cooling) should alleviate the majority of the clock speed shortfall compared to other Intel chips.

All of this will only be relevant to enthusiasts trying to assemble a meaty machine with a slew of cores and threads. No matter what the Turbo clock speed is, the Core i9-7920X will be overkill for gaming.
