Intel Core i9-7920X Review
Last Updated on by King Iphy
The Intel Core i9-7920X has 12 cores and 24 threads. It’s not uncommon for CPUs with more cores and threads to have lower clock rates than less costly ones with fewer cores and threads, but a quick search on the web reveals some worry about this one’s very low 2.9GHz base frequency.
The Core i9-7900X, a 10-core CPU with 20 threads, a 3.3GHz base clock, and 13.75MB of cache, is one step down on the Skylake-X ladder. In addition, the Core i9-7900X is 600MHz slower than AMD’s Threadripper 1920X. Should we be worried? It’s too early to tell, but there’s a lot more to think about than just the base clock speed.
The base clock on Skylake-X, according to our own Jarred Walton, is basically worthless. The base clock is the “guaranteed clock speed” that customers may expect across all cores. The Core i9-7900X has a base frequency of 3.3GHz, however, the all-core Turbo Boost 2.0 rate is 4.0GHz. Every motherboard we’ve tested the Core i9-7900X on has been able to reach that speed with ease, and some will even go as high as 4.5GHz on factory ‘Auto’ settings.
This implies that, while the base clock of the Core i9-7920X is quite low, we’re more interested in the all-core Turbo clock. Our best prediction is that it will be about 3.7-3.8GHz or such. Of course, the i9-7920X remains an unlocked enthusiast processor, so overclocking (with sufficient cooling) should alleviate the majority of the clock speed shortfall compared to other Intel chips.
All of this will only be relevant to enthusiasts trying to assemble a meaty machine with a slew of cores and threads. No matter what the Turbo clock speed is, the Core i9-7920X will be overkill for gaming.
Chipset and Features of Intel Core i9-7920X
AES and AEX
AES is a cryptographic algorithm that is used to accelerate encryption and decryption.
AVX is used to accelerate computations in multimedia, scientific, and financial applications, as well as to improve the performance of Linux RAID software.
Multithreading technology (such as Intel’s Hyperthreading or AMD’s Simultaneous Multithreading) boosts performance by dividing each physical core of the CPU into virtual cores, often known as threads. This allows each core to operate two instruction streams at the same time.
SSE is used to speed up multimedia tasks such as editing an image or adjusting audio volume. Each new version contains new instructions and SSE version 4. SSE is used to accelerate multimedia processes such as picture editing and audio volume adjustment. Each new version includes additional instructions and enhancements.
The F16C is utilized to accelerate activities such as picture contrast and volume adjustment.
Neon and MMX
Neon accelerates media processing, such as listening to MP3s.g, such as listening to MP3s.
MMX is used to speed up tasks such as adjusting the contrast of an image or adjusting volume.
A technology integrated into the processor to secure the device for use with features such as mobile payments and streaming video using digital rights management (DRM).
FMA4 and FMA3
FMA4 is used to speed up tasks such as adjusting the contrast of an image or adjusting volume.
FMA3 is used to speed up tasks such as adjusting the contrast of an image or adjusting volume.
Specifications of Intel Core i9-7920X
|CPU speed||12 x 2.9GHzvs11.63GHz|
|Turbo clock speed||4.4GHzvs3.75GHz|
Performance of Intel Core i9-7920X
12 x 2.9GHz – Its Processor speed specifies how many processing cycles per second a CPU can do while all of its cores are active (processing units). It is computed by summing the clock rates of each core or, in the case of multi-core processors with distinct microarchitectures, each group of cores.
Threads on the CPU
24 More threads equal quicker performance and improved multitasking.
Turbo Clock Speed above 4.4GHz
When the CPU is operating within its limits, it might boost to a higher clock speed to provide improved performance.
Cache L3, Cache L2, Cache L1
16.5MB – A bigger L3 cache results in a speedier CPU and better overall system performance.
12MB – A bigger L2 cache results in a speedier CPU and better overall system performance.
384KB – A larger L1 cache results in faster CPU and system-wide performance.
1MB/core. More data can be stored in the L2 cache for access by each core of the CPU.
Some processors come with an unlocked multiplier which makes them easy to overclock, allowing you to gain increased performance in games and other apps.
